Chapter Ten—Carter

That weekend was Greta’s ninetieth birthday. We had a huge celebration, with an enormous red raspberry layer cake, which even Stefan and Freyr ate, at Lowner’s insistence. Greta had a blast disemboweling her enormous stack of presents, including a Burberry coat for Poppy from me, and the matching collar and leash from Sam.

The night was a lot of fun, and Greta was buoyant and bubbly, but I could tell that Kirner’s absence affected her. Lowner told me Kirner had never missed her birthday in seventy-one years, and everyone wondered what had happened. His phone was switched off, and his two-day leave of absence had passed. He was now AWOL. The night before the party, I’d heard Greta crying in her room. I just wished I could get my hands on the bastard.

Two minutes before midnight, a truck came tearing up the driveway. Stefan’s earpiece crackled with static, and he yanked it out with a grimace. A minute later, the door slammed open and Kirner stood there, panting. Greta’s mouth fell open at his sudden appearance. He crossed the room to stand in front of her, with his hands in his pockets, looking embarrassed.

“Where were you?” she asked quietly.

“At my cabin, in the north.”

“What cabin?” Freyr blurted out. I kicked him in the shin to shut him up.

Kirner ignored us both. “I am sorry it took such a long time. I wanted very much to finish your present.”

“M-my present?”

Kirner beamed. “Just wait here. Quincy, will you help bring it in?”

Lowner grumbled something like, “Always, my mate,” but Quincy patted him on the head and went to help retrieve the gift. They brought back an enormous crate, almost five feet high, four feet wide and several feet long.

Greta shook with excitement. “What is it?” she asked. “Lemme see!”

“I hope you like it,” Kirner said, removing screws with his drill. The sides of the crate fell away, and Lowner whimpered at the gouges in the floor.

The rest of us didn’t see them, though. We were all staring in amazement at the enormous doghouse Kirner had crafted. It was styled like an English country cottage, complete with window boxes that held food and water dishes, and a mailbox with Poppy’s name on it.

“Oh my God,” Sam muttered. We all nodded in agreement.

Kirner exhaled slowly, and showed off the dog’s new piece of real estate. “If you lift the side of the roof, there’s space for collars and toys. The bottom slides out for easy cleaning, and the wires can been taken out of the windows when she doesn’t need to be in the crate anymore.”

He looked hopefully at Greta, who was staring at him without moving a muscle. It was getting tense for a moment, until Greta finally flung herself at Kirner. “Thank you,” she said, putting her arms around his neck. “I really love it.” Without letting go, she pushed up on her toes and kissed him. Then she pulled her head back and gasped in horror, then bolted out the French doors and across the lawn.
